Insulin
Insulin is the hormone that
causes your body to MAKE fat, STORE fat, and HOLD onto fat
long term. Insulin tells your fat cells to hold onto the fat
it has, stimulates the creation of fat, and stops the
breakdown of fat that is used for energy. Keeping insulin
low is the key to staying slim and learning to regulate
insulin is the key to any successful weight loss.
Regulating insulin means limiting sugar in any form.
Carbohydrates break down into glucose (your body’s version
of sugar) inside your bloodstream and increase blood sugar
levels which triggers release of insulin. Insulin tells your
body to burn up carbs (not fat) and turn those carbs into
fat to be stored in fat cells and your liver.
- Tells your body to STORE glucose
- Increases Fat Production
- Makes you Hang onto existing fat
- Inhibits the breakdown of fat
- Makes you burn glucose instead of fat for energy
Serotonin:
ALL carbs (Including fruits and whole grains as well as any sugar)
stimulate insulin production which causes weight gain. Why do you
crave carbohydrates?
The catch is…you need insulin to stimulate the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin
is the neurotransmitter that makes
you feel calm, happy, peaceful and satisfied. If your serotonin is
low, you feel sad, lonely, and depressed. Low serotonin is the main
neurotransmitter that causes food
cravings, overeating and weight gain because eating sugar will raise
your insulin and therefore raise your happy neurotransmitter. So, serotonin is
raised by a food that makes you gain weight! Is it possible to be
happy AND stay thin?
YES! Guess what makes your serotonin fall leading to sadness leading
to food cravings? The answer is an imbalance or loss of estrogen and
progesterone. It all goes back to hormone
balance. Healthy hormones
lead to better neurotransmitters in
the brain. Estrogen helps produce receptor sites in the brain for
serotonin so when hormones dip,
neurotransmitters dip. Low hormones lead to low serotonin which
leads to sugar/carb cravings which leads to weight gain.
